Couple minor scissor cuts from post office clerk wanting to capture the correct amount of postage, both stamps and the bisect tied by concentric rings, further tied by superb Montreal double arc dispatch at top. Part of backflap missing and tears (repaired) from opening, none of which detract from this exceptional cover, one of only four known 3p bisect usages. All tied by St. John NB CDS postmarks, purple boxed registered handstamp and various backstamps. A beautiful and very appealing group of covers, VF (Unitrade 97-103)

This block is the basis for its listing in mint condition in the Unitrade specialized catalogue.

DENNINGER - CANADA - 1868-1952 105c, 107d, 109b,The set of three imperforate tête-bêche booklet panes with the 1c yellow Die I and 2c green in two panes of six, and the 3c carmine Die I in two panes of four, all with the right pane inverted. These striking tête-bêche imperforates are by far the rarest such imperforates of Canada, a mere seven sets exist.

The One cent and Three cent panes are without gum as are all known. Both are large margined, the former in an excellent state of preservation, the latter with slight marginal crease between rows. The Two cent has minor gum thins and slight ink offset. Mint hinged OG, some are NH. During our research on 2 cent panes we found other examples with noticeable faults, such as gum problems and creases.

A total of seven sets exist. Thanks to Leopold Beaudet's latest census (published in Admiral's Log, Vol. XIII, No. 1, Dec. 2013) we can provide a concise summary. "SET number" in bold designates that we have seen the actual item or a clear illustration.

SET 1 - ex. Norris (1950; 1c, 3c panes); Jephcott (1990; 2c pane was added to complete the set).

SET 2 - ex. Maresch Sale 182, October 1985, Lot 920; John Tomlinson Collection (1992), Baron collection (2016).

SET 3 - ex. Lewis Reford (ca. 1944 privately sold to Richardson), Ed Richardson (1978), Athena (2023).

It is interesting to note that several prominent Admiral collectors of the past, including Harry Lussey, George Marler and Abe Charkow among others, were never able to secure a set for their collections.

DENNINGER - CANADA - MODERN 430a, 430b,The famous and extraordinary surcharge error block displaying a with and without surcharge se-tenant pair at top. The lower left stamp, which was later separated from the block, was originally folded over the top left stamp during surcharging, receiving the surcharge inverted on the gum side. These two UNIQUE items are the basis for the listings in Unitrade and Scott, first documented in Maple Leaves in June 1965, aptly titled "A Real Find". Their catalogue value of $20,000 has changed very little in the last twenty years, explained by their absence in the marketplace. A block of seventeen was broken up (photocopy enclosed) and sold in October 1998 in a Firby auction (Lots 46-50, ex. Gillilan Holding). Most were noticeably faulty. We believe these and one sound example (ex. Lussey) are the only known examples.

DENNINGER - CANADA - BACK OF BOOK 1877 (February 14) Cover mailed registered from Goderich to Leeds, England, bearing two single 5c olive green Montreal printing perf 11½x12 and an 8c Registered Letter Stamp (small internal flaw), all tied or cancelled by indistinct two-ring numerals (should be '21'), mostly clear dispatch CDS at left, straightline REGISTERED in red, same-day Toronto transit and neat oval Registered Leeds 2 MR 77 datestamp in red. An exceedingly rare combination of a double preferred pre-UPU letter rate plus 8c registration fee, franked in-period with an 8c RLS. The only instance (among sixteen reported covers) displaying this franking; a great showpiece, F-VF (Unitrade 38a, F3)

Literature: According to the Harrison, Arfken & Lussey "Canada's Registered Mail 1802-1909" census on Table 36 titled "Eight Cent RLS Covers to the U.K. Showing Required and Intended Use" on page 295, this is Cover No. 11. Only 16 covers bearing the 8c RLS properly used between March 1876 and December 1877 have been reported in this census.

This cover surfaced at auction in 2000 and was not in the initial census by George Arfken in "Canada's Small Queen Era 1870-1897" book (page 258; Table 1).

Guilfoyle and the series designed by Lyndwoode Pereira of the Department of the Interior, assisted by F. Brownell.

This essay and three more (another in green, one in black, and one in brown violet now residing permanently in Library and Archives Canada), surfaced from 90 years of obscurity in the famous American Bank Note Company Archives sale in 1990. They are the only ones we have seen. The owner was successful in acquiring all three of the available essays, the only known examples in private hands, which he has held them for over 30 years.

1897 DIAMOND JUBILEE - ESSAYS AND PROOFS Presenting a wonderful array of trial colour die proofs, all produced from the three-cent die (lots 512-547). Initially numbered in pencil by the American Bank Note Company, these numbers are apparent on the large-size proofs and served as colour codes for the printer. Minuse & Pratt "Essays and Proofs of British North America" handbook states: "identification of at least 36 trial colours submitted for 16 stamps." It is interesting to note that on June 24, 1897, just five days after the Jubilees were issued, Newfoundland released its own series of commemoratives for the occasion, additionally celebrating the 400th Anniversary of the Discovery of Newfoundland by John Cabot. Also printed by American Bank Note, all fourteen stamps show the ABNC imprint below the design.

1897 DIAMOND JUBILEE - STAMPS 59s-65s,An extraordinary set of seven mint strips of five with SPECIMEN handstamps - the largest known multiples (these were originally intended to be sent to and distributed by the International Bureau of the Universal Postal Union). Displaying remarkably fresh, bright colours; couple strips with faint natural gum bends, $5 with spot of disturbed gum on lower stamp, inconsequential for these extremely rare multiples with pristine original gum, NEVER HINGED. The documented Major Re-entries at Pos. 3 & 5 are present with features clearly visible.

We are aware of only one other sheet of the ten cents, which is noticeably off-centre (ex. Ron Brigham, November 2014; Lot 361).

1897 DIAMOND JUBILEE - POSTAL HISTORY Undated newspaper or periodical wrapper mailed locally at Toronto and franked with single 1c Jubilee tied by light roller cancel in "proviso" instead of the required ½c for the proper rate. Highly interesting and rare, Fine (Unitrade 51) ex. Alfred Cook (October 1985; Lot 77)

Speculation in ½¢ Jubilees rapidly depleted stocks, so Postmasters were instructed to supply users with 1c stamps and obtain a refund from the Post Office for the overpayment. We believe this item illustrates this unforeseen practice.

An unusual combination for the 7 cent rate (2c domestic letter + 5c registration). The 7c Numeral was not issued until December 23, 1902.

New York Exchange and Valparaiso registration labels affixed over postage stamps which pays the 5c UPU letter rate plus 5c registration to Chile, South America.
